we just had our fall break and definitely needed to get away. we didn’t want to drive to far, since we only had a limited time. we have been going to chicago for quick weekend trips lately and it has been just the break we needed. a bit of city and an easy drive. the crisp fall air is appealing and a city vibe is just what we craved. we hit some of our favorites like rosebud on rush and fred’s, but also tried some places i haven’t mentioned!
chicago athletic association / this weekend we stayed at the chicago athletic association. this hotel is really cool. it is a long abandoned 1890’s athletic association which has been brought back to life as a hipster boutique hotel. the hotel was designed by roman and williams, and they have captured the spirit of the space with modern edge. the rooms are beyond cool and the common spaces have a ton of ambiance. think the royal tenenbaums. there are several cool places in the hotel to grab a drink or dine. cindy’s is the rooftop bar and restaurant overlooking millennium park. it was a fantastic place to grab cocktail and enjoy the view in the evening. i highly suggest reservations at cindy’s if you want to dine there. there is also the game room where you can play bocce ball, pool, foosball and a ton of other vintage games. other places to hang out include the lobby bar, the cherry circle room and the shake shack. also, don’t miss the well curated gift shop, madison hall. it’s a chic stop for her and him.

public hotel / last spring we stayed at the public hotel, an ian schrager hotel. the hotel has a great location and an amazing lobby. the space is chic and industrial with an elegant vibe. the pump room, the hotel’s glamorous supper club with a modern twist, is a really cool place to have a cocktail and relax after a day walking around the city. the cocktails are handcrafted and delicious. the rooms are crisp and modern and decorated with a minimalist style. we got a suite and it was nice to have the extra space.

lincoln park zoo / we have gone to the lincoln park zoo the past two times we have been to chicago. this zoo is a lot of fun and is a pretty place to spend an afternoon. the lions are always putting on a show as are the orangutans in the primate house. this weekend we went to the fall fest at the zoo and it was a great time! we loved the corn maze and the ferris wheel, which had great views of lake michigan and downtown chicago.

pizano’s / my son’s buddies filled him in about chicago pizza and he was dying to try it. pizano’s was right next to our hotel and we lucked out to find there was only a short wait for a late lunch. the pizza was a true classic chicago deep dish and we paired that with a classic italian salad. the kids were surprised at the end of the meal with an insane cookie sundae! they had the classic chicago pizza experience and were in heaven!
